Library News for June to August 2015, the Summer Break edition

National Libraries and AD Colleges Combine Resources

Did you know that the National Libraries of Abu Dhabi have wonderful collections of books, magazines and databases that are not likely to be found on our campus libraries? The National Libraries and Abu Dhabi College Libraries have joined together to give students and staff access to their wonderful collections. The best news is that your membership will be free of charge! The Khalifa Park Library is of special interest to students doing Arabic or Emirati Studies. The Bahia and Mazyad Mall libraries have a wonderful collection for children. So, if you want to extend your reading please visit your AD College library to sign a membership form and learn more about the National libraries.

Faculty Research Group

Reading Challenge

During Semester 2, ten Foundations classes participated in the ADMC Reading Challenge. The classes worked diligently over the semester and made very good progress in their reading. Some students achieved excellent results.

On Thursday, May 21st, we celebrated the students’ success by hosting two Reading Challenge Award Ceremonies for morning and afternoon classes. During the morning ceremony, the winners were presented with their trophies by Dr. Sultan Karmostaji, the ADMC Director. The afternoon awards were presented by Joan Anderson, the ADMC Foundations Chair. Trophies were given for best readers (Levels 1-4) and the best class. Congratulations go to all the Reading Challenge winners.

Summer Break

Abu Dhabi Men's College Library will remain open during the Summer Break. However, check at the library for adjusted break and Ramadan hours.

The library wishes all students, faculty and staff a safe break and a Blessed Ramadan.

Library News for May 2015

Air 27 @ ADMC

An interesting object has landed in the ADMC Library. It is the Air 27 and is part of a collaborative project initiated by the Teaching and Learning Department, and Curriculum Development. We are lucky enough to trial it in ADMC. Students and faculty are able to book this space and provide us with valuable feedback by filling in a survey after use. In this space you can do: 

• collaborative team work
• concentrated personal work
• Small presentations
• Planning work with the white board
• Shared discussion
• Media work
• Quiet discussion

We are also hoping to set up some inter college collaborations with Sharjah Men’s College who were lucky enough to trial one too.

Library Week @ ADMC

Library Week was celebrated at ADMC from 12-16 April 2015. The theme was "Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library". So, in spirit with the theme, several displays and activities were organized to show students how greatness could be achieved by using your library!

Biographical books of great people were displayed alongside short descriptions of of the persons on a screen; and there was a daily showing of a movie/documentary that highlighted the life of someone who exceeded their possibilities. We also challenged students to build a paper plane that could fly 12 meters; and we had two demonstrations of a very advanced camera drone!

Library Week and Photo Contest

It is time for Library Week from 12 to 16 April! The theme for 2015 is "Unlimited Possibilities @ Your Library". The message is that no matter who you are, or where you come from, you can achieve great things, and the library is one of your best tools in your journey.

• Discover books and videos on the lives of great achievers in the Library.
• Try your hand at creativity by folding the perfect paper plane, and seeing if it will fly the distance.
• See a demonstration of an advanced camera drone flying in the Library!
• Start planning your photos to shoot for the launch of our Photo Contest - more info below.

Photo Contest

The computers in the Library and the Independent Learning Center (ILC) use student photographs as screensavers. This year we would like to add new photographs to these screensavers, and what better way than having the students contribute and potentially win a prize!

As part of Library Week, and with a theme that mirrors Library Week, namely "Unlimited Possibilities in the UAE", students are invited to submit photographs that tie into the theme, and are created within the UAE.

• Entries are limited to ADMC students only
• Photos can be taken with any device
• Must be original and not heavily manipulated (e.g. Photoshop)
• Must fulfill the theme in an understandable manner
• Contest closes at the end of May 2015

ILC Website Update

The ADMC ILC team have been busy updating the ILC website for students and faculty. With the help of the ADMC IT department and faculty feedback, students can now access an updated and more streamlined website. This website has links to many English, Math and IELTs websites to support your learning.

Faculty Research Meetings in March

Speaker: Dr. Sathya Sivam

Topic: “Validation Studies in Social Sciences”

This brief seminar is meant for social science researchers who like to develop a reliable and valid scale to measure a behavioural phenomenon. It will give a basic introduction about the relevance of reliability and validity measures of a questionnaire and how to assess them using SPSS. This session is mostly meant for non-experts in statistics who inevitably have to apply it in their research.

Speaker: Dr. David Palfreyman, Editor of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education: Gulf Perspectives

This research session will look at the topic of “How to get published”. David will also discuss his role as editor of this peer-reviewed online journal, and tips for getting your work published there.
